  • What the Jury said:

What’s new about Pinocchio? It’s a long story, this book tells us. Everything about this psychedelic, pop, absurd, humoristic and satirical picturebook is unexpected. The beloved puppet of children’s literature, a figure that has been a continuous inspiration for artists all over the world, here presents an entirely new gallery of heroes and adventures. The graphic design plays with scale. The pages are peopled with historiated initials reminiscent of illuminated manuscripts, giant page numbers, avant-garde references and a medley of geometrical characters, their neon colours boldly outlined in black. Spread after spread, the mix of different layouts and the uncommon use of line-cut technique make for a truly extraordinary picturebook.

    What the Jury said:

  • This puzzle of a picturebook presents a sequence of surreal double-spread scenarios populated by fantastical, unsettling tool-headed figures who busily build a civilization. Rich with references to western art, such as Hieronymus Bosch and surrealism of the twentieth-century, this dystopian story is about the eternal human obsession to transform the planet. The story covers a time scale from September through to the following August. The question at the heart of the book – and then what? – investigates issues of technical progress and a sustainable future. The question is left unanswered.

The Jury was delighted by the affecting atmosphere of this picturebook, which depicts everyday life in a rural community. The mixed-media illustrations show both loving gestures, hardship, poverty, disease and care for the elderly. In detailed scenes of the natural landscape and agricultural work, the illustrations show the richness and fragility of life.

    What the Jury said:

Starting with the binocular image on the cover, this almost wordless book takes readers on a cinematic journey through a man’s life across time and space. Each two-page spread juxtaposes viewpoints: on the left, the reader’s views of the character, who at the outset is a child , and on the right, the man’s view of the world. The sparest of texts accompanies this visual account: a date indicated by the month and year, a name and the geographical region of a place. This stunning work uses a retro-vintage printing style with just three colors, no half-tones, and minimalist composition. A truly unique visual poem.

  • Atlas das viagens e dos exploradores

  • 그림작가 Bernardo P. Carvalho

  • 글작가 Isabel Minhós Martins

  • 페이지 140

  • 출판사 Planeta Tangerina

  • 발행일 2018-04-01

    What the Jury said:
This illustrated collective biography celebrates explorers from around the world including Pytheas, Ibn Battuta, Mary Kingsley, Xuanzang, Marco Polo and Charles Darwin. The profiles humanize the historical figures, revealing the circumstances of each person’s life, the motivation for their quests—not just business interests and religious demands, but also the eternal human desire to face the unknown. The freedom and courage of the travellers are masterfully interpreted by the versatility and incredibly wide range of techniques and vision of the artist Bernardo Carvalho. Bold, black-ink vignettes of people and places alternate with vibrantly coloured acrylic paintings of mysterious abstract landscapes. The blending of styles and wide, open formats offer readers an opportunity to travel freely in their own imagined worlds.

    What the Jury said:
This very clever picturebook combines numbers and pictures with infographic language to impart a series of pointedly accurate statistics about things happening in the world every second of the day – facts that show up telling contrasts. The contradictions evidenced by the pictures are at times humorous and often shocking, prompting the reader to think of their implications. We learn, for example, of the salary difference between an athlete and a CEO (3 dollars as against 48) or the money spent for humanitarian aid and weapons (410 dollars compared with 5,500) or the number of kilometres cars have been driven (450,000, the distance between the Earth and the moon).

    What the Jury said:
This graphic novel presents a history of women’s contribution to the battle for human rights. The chapters spotlight individual and collective struggles around the world in different time periods, from Harriet Tubman and Rosa Luxemburg through to Malala. The author uses bold black outlines and differentiates the stories with single, distinct background colours. The graphic form and writing style – the work of an artistic duo - combine beautifully to depict the small moments that made up the big picture of women’s history.

    What the Jury said:
Named after a real street in France, this book follows the history of just one side of the street over more than a century, from 1890 to 2018. The book’s subtitle, au fil des migrations, is a clue to the book’s main idea: how migrants enrich communities. Each spread introduces new characters from many countries who contribute to the life of the street in different ways. The horizontal layout is functional to the streetscape subject, the style referencing ligne claire drawing. The clever, clearly defined scenarios use a variation-on-theme technique to show the passing of time, inviting the reader to linger over changing details like clothing, car design, advertisements and shop signs.

  • 글작가 Johannes Amos Comenius

  • 발행일 2017-12-10

    What the Jury said:

  • The Jury is delighted to applaud Zorro Rojo’s special initiative in returning to the very first picturebook for children: Orbis Pictus, the Painted World, published in 1658 by the Bohemian master John Amos Comenius. The exquisite graphic design reflects the original page layout of the first children’s learning book, which paved the way for the encyclopaedias that were to come. As well as plants, animals, the seasons and man’s deeds, Comenius also dealt with subjects like the soul and dragons, depicted by engravings with brief descriptions. Making this seminal book available with the Spanish translation alongside the original Latin creates a new milestone in the history of children’s literature.

The jury appreciated the maturity of the graphic work from the front to the endpapers, the overall visual concept and artwork as well as the author’s narrative skill and expert pacing. The characters show delicate feelings and affection, the scenes have a balanced simplicity and economy of composition rendered in a mix of watercolours and gouache. • 글작가 David HockneyMartin Gayford

  • 페이지 128

  • 출판사 Thames & Hudson

  • 발행일 2018-09-06

    What the Jury said:

  • A conversation between artist David Hockney and the art critic Martin Gayford offers children a unique journey through the history of images and the process of artistic creation. The book shows new ways of introducing children to visual culture. Illustrator Rose Blake does the impossible, connecting images representing a wide range of art forms, visual languages, and master works, from the Lascaux Caves to Hockney’s own iPad creations. Her small joyfully humorous vignettes are brimming with narrative verve. Indeed, illustration is here the key to whetting children’s interest in visual culture. As a project, the book and its interplay of dialogue are profoundly new, casting into question myths and prejudices that have often hindered an authentic, meaningful relationship with art. It accompanies the reader as she discovers the essence of artistic creation and art. This book is a gift for all ages.

    What the Jury said:

  • 31 young illustrators were invited to create their own 2-coloured artwork inspired by two of their own preferred works of art from whatever period. A group of children aged 6 to 12 were invited by publisher Vicente Ferrer to discuss the illustrations. Their answers make up the text of this very special collection of diverse and often amusing exchanges between the illustrators and the works of art, and between the children and the illustrations. The ‘Museum’ of the title is not a physical but a virtual space that looks to new ways of reading and living art. This experimental book creates an innovative space for dialogue across generations and art forms as well as a new way of introducing young readers to visual language. It also affords a rare insight into how children read pictures

    What the Jury said:

  • Classical in its layout and narrative, this board book sets itself apart for the expressive effectiveness and refined pictorial technique of the illustrations. The images follow one another in no chronological sequence, like a series of frame stops. This highlights the affective intensity of each scene, the interpersonal relationships portrayed, and the close connection with the natural world and its creatures.

    What the Jury said:

Using the graphic stratagem of contrasting opposites, the book illustrates two parallel stories that meet in the middle. The everyday gestures of grownups are explained through the lives of two brothers with very different jobs. The illustration has a refined simplicity. The use of black and white underlines the differences in the two occupations, while the addition of red creates a highly effective visual impact. Dynamic and implicitly musical, the sequence of images is particularly effective, stimulating the young child’s aesthetic and emotional senses.
